Han Kyeong-A

Moon Lee-Hak
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to suggest a direction for the development of an evidence?based art therapy intervention program for elders with dementia by conducting a meta-analysis to provide a comprehensive and scientific basis to evaluate the effectiveness of art therapy for elders with dementia. For this purpose, a meta-analysis was conducted on 40 papers from domestic journals and master's theses and doctoral dissertations, which reported the effectiveness of art therapy for elders with dementia, and the results are as follows. The studies on art therapy for elders with dementia tend to steadily increase, and the total effective size of art therapy for elders with dementia was calculated by applying the random-effects model as Hedges¡¯g=0.715(Z=3.830, P<0.05), showing a statistically significant intermediate size. Among the characteristics of art therapy intervention applied to the elders with dementia, the results of comparing the differences of the effective sizes for dependent variables identified by cognitive, psychological/emotional, self expression/communication, behavior, and quality of life, was Q=42.579(p=0.000). The indicated that there was a statistically significant difference, and among them, the quality of life showed the greatest effective size. On the other hand, the severity of dementia, the total number of sessions, the number of sessions per week, and the media/technique among the characteristics of art therapy intervention for elders with dementia did not show any significant difference between the effective sizes.
